Celebrating Two Milestones: 25 Years of Japan–Mongolia Legal Academic Exchange and the 20th Anniversary of CJLM
On March 20, 2026, a commemorative ceremony marking the 25th Anniversary of the Academic Cooperation Agreement between the School of Law, National University of Mongolia, and the School of Law, Nagoya University, as well as the 20th Anniversary of the Research and Education Center for Japanese Law in Mongolia (CJLM), was held at the National University of Mongolia in Ulaanbaatar. Following the 6th Joint Symposium on the Fundamental Issues of Public and Private Law and the anniversary ceremony, an alumni gathering was convened, bringing together approximately 80 participants.
Academic exchange between the two institutions dates back to the mid‑1990s.In 2000, under the leadership of Dean S. Narangerel, a departmental exchange agreement was concluded, which was elevated to an inter‑university agreement in 2006. Shortly thereafter, the second CJL, following the inaugural center in Uzbekistan, was established in Mongolia.
Today, the School of Law at the National University of Mongolia is led by Dean B. Amarsanaa and includes 15 faculty members who are graduates of Nagoya University and the CJL program. To date, CJL Mongolia has produced 113 graduates across 15 cohorts, who are contributing to a wide range of fields, including Mongolian government agencies (7), the National University of Mongolia as teaching staff (8), research institutes (4), law firms (27), and corporate legal departments (11). Whether engaged in legislative drafting, university teaching, or CJL education, these alumni are making significant and tangible contributions to the development of Mongolia’s legal system.
In recognition of its longstanding efforts to promote academic exchange between Japan and Mongolia, CJL Mongolia was awarded the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation in August 2024.
