A visit by the Vietnamese Minister of Justice, Le Thanh Long

H.E. Le Thanh Long, Minister of Justice of Vietnam, an alumnus of the Graduate School of Law, visited CALE on July 7, 2023. He visited Japan to participate in the ASEAN-G7 Justice Ministers’ Meeting held in Tokyo. He last came to Japan in 2019, and it has been nearly four years since that visit.

During his visit to CALE, he met with Nagoya University Vice-Presidents: Mizutani Norimi, and Kimura Shogo, as well as CALE Director Murakami Masako, and CJL Director Matsuo Yoh. Later, Minister Long met with 20 Vietnamese students enrolled in the Graduate School of Law. In the evening of the same day, a welcome dinner was hosted for Minister Long, attended additionally by about 40 guests. This dinner was attended by the President of the Nagoya University Alumni Association Masaharu Shibata, School of Law alumnus, other alumni from various fields, faculty members of Nagoya University and other universities, and representatives of legal and industrial circles who have close relations with Minister and Vietnam.

Minister Long came to Japan as an international student in 1999 and obtained his doctoral degree in 2003. He was the first doctoral student in the English language course at the Graduate School of Law, and his future perspectives were highly anticipated while he was a student. After returning to Vietnam, he served as Director General of the Department of General Affairs on Legislative Development of the Ministry of Justice of Vietnam and, later, Deputy Minister of Justice. He was appointed as Minister of Justice in April 2016.

During the July 2023 visit to CALE, Minister Long emphasized the importance of legal education in Japanese. He expressed his gratitude to CALE/CJL, noting that CJL alumni could now serve as skilled interpreters. This was Minister Lon’s fifth visit to Japan since completing his studies at Nagoya University. He expressed his intention to establish a good tradition of visiting Nagoya regularly and spoke enthusiastically of his warm feelings for his alma mater.
