CALE Conducts Training for Thai Judges

On September 18-30, 2023, CALE conducted a training program on “Dispute Management and Access to Justice”, for fifteen judges dispatched by the Office of the Judiciary of Thailand.
Originally, the two institutions developed a relationship through accepting Thai judges as students at the Graduate School of Law of Nagoya University and conducting mutual guest lectures. A memorandum of understanding was concluded to promote educational exchange, institutional cooperation, and academic activities in 2020 and renewed in May 2023.
This time, following a request from the Office of the Judiciary of Thailand, CALE conducted training programs in Tokyo and Nagoya. In Tokyo, the participants visited the Supreme Court, the Legal Training and Research Institute, the Foreign Residents Support Center, the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, the International Cooperation Department of the Research and Training Institute of the Ministry of Justice, the University of Tokyo, and Meiji University to learn about the digitalization of the courts, the training system for judges, and efforts toward access to justice. In Nagoya, in addition to a visit to the Nagoya District Court, lectures at Nagoya University covered a wide range of topics, including judicial ethics, international commercial arbitration, international child custody disputes, and adhesion contract regulations.
