CALE received a donation of e-books about Cambodian traditional calendars

In November 2023, the Center of Asian Legal Exchange (CALE), Nagoya University, received donation soft-data of books from H.E. ROATH Kim Soeun, who is currently an assistant to the Cabinet of the President of the Constitutional Council of Cambodia (CCC), through H.E. TAING Ratana, the Secretary General of CCC during his schooling in NAGOYA University Japan.

In Cambodia, there are many ways to calculate calendars, such as the Western calendar or other traditional Cambodian calendars known as Chula Sakarat（Lesser era calendar）, the Buddhist calendar, etc. This book will give you a detailed explanation of how to calculate the Lunisolar calendar, which is one of Cambodian traditional calendars, based on the formula used by Cambodian ancestors, and the results of the Lunisolar calendar calculation by the author from 1 A.D. till 3316 A.D.

H.E. ROATH Kim Soeun is a former secondary school teacher interested in Khmer astronomy. After retiring in 1996, he researched by reading documents that he had collected related to Cambodia’s traditional calendar system. Those documents were written in Khmer, English and French languages. It made him more interested in Khmer traditional calendar system and gave him basic knowledge of converting different calendars. After that, he decided to edit those precious documents in Khmer language and describe in detail what he had learned through this book.

H.E. ROATH Kim Soeun heard from H.E TAING Ratana, the Secretary General of CCC and an LL.D. candidate of the Asian Satellite Campuses Institute (ASCI) program, that Nagoya University involved in many research projects, including legal, historical and cultural studies in Asia. He is interested in those research activities and would like to contribute his research achievements to Nagoya University through CALE. He expects these books to be an excellent source for research and development in Asian legal studies, especially Cambodian tradition.
Therefore, with the author’s consent, CALE has made the soft data of these books available on CALE’s website for free download and access.
