Our programs are at the frontiers of
\nlegal research on Asian countries.<\/h3>\n

Japanese research on the legal systems of other Asian countries was generally focused on China. As Japan has
\nstrengthened ties with many other Asian countries in recent years, there is an increasing interest in the entire region for
\nbusiness and academic reasons. Nagoya University has trained specialists in the different fields of national law of
\nVietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Mongolia and other countries. It remains at the frontier of Asian law studies, often
\nworking in collaboration with other Asian and Western research institutions. CALE collects and disseminates basic
\ninformation on Asian laws, conducts theoretical research, and thus focuses on both; enriching of academic knowledge
\nand development of programs which meet business or other related social needs.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

While conducting legal assistance programs in practice, CALE also takes legal assistance seriously as a new
\nphenomenon in the legal world \u2013 and endeavors to seek academic insights into the subject of legal assistance on its own
\nright. Legal assistance programs are supported by theoretical inquiries into legal assistance as a new academic agenda
\ncovering topics on principles and philosophy of legal assistance to specific countries and legal areas, methods for
\nimplementation and evaluation. Key issues include; the harmonization between national and international laws amid
\nglobalization and regional integration processes, transplantation of laws and conflicts with traditional legal systems, and
\nthe process through which transplanted laws may take root in the new environment. Legal assistance also represents a
\nnew direction of outward transmission for Japanese legal studies which have previously been oriented toward the
\nabsorption of European and American legal approaches.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

While being the only university-level center in Japan
\nwhich specializes in legal assistance, CALE plays a
\ncoordinating role for research related to Asian law and
\npolitics and Asian legal assistance. These activities
\ninvolve an extensive network-building among
\nacademicians, researchers, government officials and
\nlegal practitioners.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Legal assistance is also conducted by some

\neducation activities in collaboration with universities in
\nthese countries and international aid agencies which are
\nsupporting legal assistance and research in Asian

Japanese companies which carry out business

\ninformation on pertinent national laws. CALE uses its
\ninternational network to provide those companies with
\nessential information as well as expert personnel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In connection with various research projects on Asian
\nlaw, politics and legal assistance, CALE organizes many
\nsymposiums and workshops in cooperation with
\nrespective universities, legal practitioners and
\ngovernment agencies of different Asian countries. As a
\npart of the ongoing exchange activities, CALE regularly
\nhosts prominent legal experts from other countries as
\nvisiting scholars and researchers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Working with JICA to provide
    \ntraining for specialists from
    \nAsian countries in Japan<\/p>\n

    CALE coordinates training in Japan for groups from
    \nspecific countries as a part of the overseas development
    \nassistance programs run by the Japan International
    \nCooperation Agency (JICA). Due to the experience
    \navailable, CALE has been hosting trainee groups from
    \nLaos, Iran, Mongolia and Uzbekistan. Collaboration with
    \nJICA legal assistance projects also includes cooperation
    \nby individual faculty members in their capacity as short
    \nterm JICA experts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
